The "sideways" cross... necklace

I recently purchased a new necklace from gemsinvogue on Etsy.  I was so excited that I wanted to share it with all of my customers as well.  Then, I got the question, "what does the 'sideways' cross mean?"... That got me to thinking.  Actually, I'm not quite sure it has a 'meaning', but I found a meaning for myself and it makes me even more proud to wear it!

Ths cross was on its side as Jesus carried it and, to me, by wearing this cross necklace, I am symbolically carrying my own cross as we are commanded to do...

Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. Luke 9:23

  1. I think these necklaces are so pretty and different and I told my husband about them and he asked if it had a meaning to it, so I looked it up today and no one really knows, just kinda guessing, but I LOVE your answer! If I get one that is what I'm saying the meaning will be :)

  4. I bought these necklaces for both of my sons girlfriends for Christmas from Stella & Dot. Apparently, it is one of their more popular pieces and it took longer for me to receive it. I was searching the internet to find out the meaning of the "Sideways Cross"??! Like the others commented above, no one could really give a concrete answer on what it meant?! When I found your blog post about this.... I cried!! I just love how you brought in the scripture and pointed out that this is is what God wants/commands for us to do daily!! Thank you for you post on this!! I can't wait to tell the girls this special meaning of the CROSS behind this beautiful necklace!! (:

  5. I really love your meaning. As a new fad comes out, everyone wants to jump on the "bandwagon" but don't really know the meaning behind things. As a christian we have t be mindful of what we adorn ourselves with-some things could very well be demonic and we not even know it. It's just all in what you believe. We can always turn something negative into something positive. I thank God for giving you this revelation and I think everyone will use your meaning more as it is shared throughout the world.

  6. Thank you. I was searching the Internet for the meaning after seeing one on the anchorwomen on the news. Your explanation is great and I'd love to get bracelets for my boys and a necklace for my daughter.

  7. With it laying on it's side doesn't it appear to be more laying down than "picked up"? We are called to pick up our cross, not lay it down. (Luke 9:23). We are called to arm ourselves and fight, taking up the whole armor of God (Ephesians 6:13). Wearing a sideways, laying down cross seems antithetical to what we are called to do in scripture.
And how many times are we called to stand? We are not standing in our own strength, either, but stand in Jesus. (Romans 14:4). His cross is still standing! Why would we ever signal that we are laying down our Christianity?

I am NOT trying to down your personal meaning, but doesn't the fact that you had to make up your own because no-one really has a meaning concern you the slightest bit? If there is this much confusion about its meaning, can it be good? God is not the author of confusion.

Also, (now this is just something to think about), the people who designed it could be worshippers of satan himself and cursed all that were produced (and know that the church has definitely been infiltrated, not all who say Lord, Lord will enter into His kingdom)... and then those who believe in Christ and the suffering that He endured on the upright cross for our sins declaring that "it is finished-(which triumphs Him carrying it btw)" are compromising and wearing them because "they look good" or are the "new trend". As Sherria stated, we are quick to "adorn ourselves with-some things could very well be demonic and we not even know it." I believe so many Christian compromise these days for things that they like whether they are biblical or not. Aren't we as Christians called NOT to be confirmed to the ways of this world? I don't want to be the bad guy here, I just think that if it doesn't line up with the Word of God and we have to "make up" our own meanings and compromise on things then they are not of God. I could be wrong but as "cute" as they might look I would choose not to wear one.

    2. THANK YOU!!!!.
One quarter turn and it's full on demonic. People, please look to those in your churches that can discern such things.Better yet, ask the Holy Spirit HIMSELF.

  8. I feel ill, whenever I see this thing. I don't care if 'Forever 21' is selling it. The John 3:16 thing is great....but 1 Peter 5:8
"Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour"

How do you know that the FALLEN one...is not luring our children and other Christians into believing this symbol is just fine.

Remember, 2 Corinthians 11:14 "And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light."

  10. When I first saw the sideways cross, it symbolized to me how Jesus carried the cross for me. It reminded me of the position that it was in as he carried it.
